Who Can Get Logan County Death Records

Recent death records from Logan County are not open to everyone. Under Title 63, Section 1-323, death certificates less than 50 years old are restricted. Eligible requesters include the surviving spouse, parent, child, grandparent, sibling, or legal guardian. A funeral director of record or someone named in the will also qualifies. Court orders can grant access to others.

You must show a valid photo ID. A driver's license, passport, military ID, or tribal photo ID all work. The Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma guide has the full breakdown of who qualifies.

Historical Death Records in Logan County

Logan County has some of the oldest records in Oklahoma. Guthrie was founded during the Land Run of 1889 and served as the territorial capital. The courthouse may hold death records that predate the state system, which began in 1908. These early records are not always in the state death index. Checking with the county clerk is a smart move for any death before 1910.

The Oklahoma Historical Society has extensive genealogy resources that include Logan County records. Their Research Center in Oklahoma City provides free access to Ancestry Library Edition, Fold3, HeritageQuest Online, and Newspapers.com. Obituaries from the Guthrie Daily Leader and other local papers are useful when the official death index comes up short.

The statewide death registration system was not fully complied with until about 1930. For Logan County deaths between 1908 and 1930, some records may only exist at the county level. The OHS Research Center also has probate files, funeral home records, and cemetery indexes that cover the Guthrie area. Because Guthrie was the capital, early records tend to be better preserved here than in many smaller counties.
